Making headway against cancer often means using existing tools in new ways, or finding brand new methods of treatment that can offer real hope. Our Board-certified medical oncologists, working hand in hand with our naturopathic oncologists, excel at offering innovative treatment options - often years before they become generally available at other medical centers across the country.
Whatever medical therapies are best for you, your physician will work collaboratively with you and the rest of your treatment team to carefully monitor your progress and ensure the optimum continuum of care. In the event you need inpatient treatment, our oncologists have admitting privileges in all major Seattle-area hospitals. Here are some of the treatments that we offer:
Metronomic dose (also called fractionated dose) chemotherapy: Since the late 1990s, our oncologists have recognized the benefits of lower-dose but more frequent chemotherapy treatments to effectively fight cancer while minimizing side effects. As a result, many of our patients are able to avoid the often-debilitating side effects of traditional chemotherapy - fatigue, nausea, hair loss, etc. These less harsh weekly are a standard treatment option for most patients and most cancers at our clinic.
Hormone therapy: For both prostate cancer and breast cancer, hormone therapy is used to keep cancer cells from getting the hormones they need to grow. Hormones are chemicals produced by glands in your body, and are circulated in the bloodstream. Estrogen and progesterone are hormones that affect the way some cancers grow. If tests show that your cancer cells have estrogen, progesterone and/or testosterone receptors (molecules found in some cancer cells to which estrogen and progesterone will attach), hormone therapy is used to block the way these hormones help the cancer grow. This treatment may include the use of drugs that change the way hormones work, or surgery to remove the ovaries that make female hormones, or the testicles, which produce male hormones.
Biotherapy/immunotherapy: Cancer may develop when the immune system breaks down or is not functioning adequately. Biotherapy is designed to repair, stimulate or enhance your body's own immune responses to stop, control or suppress processes that permit cancer growth. It also can make cancer cells more recognizable and, therefore, more susceptible to destruction by your immune system. We also use this therapy to boost the killing power of your immune system cells, to alter cancer cells' growth patterns to promote behavior like that of healthy cells, and to block or reverse the process that changes a normal cell or a pre-cancerous cell into a cancerous cell. Biotherapy enhances your body's ability to repair or replace normal cells damaged or destroyed by other forms of cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation, and can prevent cancer cells from spreading to other parts of your body.
Innovative treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer: A novel combination and dosing of chemotherapy drugs is now being offered on or off a clinical trial sponsored by Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center, offering new hope to patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.
Innovative treatments for breast cancer: Herceptin has been the center's standard treatment for HER-2/neu positive breast cancer in the adjuvant setting (early before the cancer spreads) since 1999, more than five years before this treatment was recognized as a breakthrough. Our center also was one of the first to recognize the effectiveness of Taxol, helping patients avoid the heart problems that were associated with the more standard treatment drug, Adriamycin. Our breast cancer patients have been receiving the safer and more effective Aromatase inhibitors instead of Tamoxifen in the adjuvant setting since 1999. Using this advanced treatment helps prevent the strokes and the risk of developing uterine cancers associated with Tamoxifen.
Innovative treatments for lung cancer: Using our innovative chemotherapy dosing technique, along with a landmark combination of medicines and supportive therapies, Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center has pioneered a new protocol for the treatment of lung cancer producing remarkable response rates.
Innovative treatments for large cell lymphomas: Seattle Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center was among the first medical centers in the world to add Rituxan to the standard CHOP (a combination of four drugs) protocol for large cell lymphoma. The addition of Rituxan has been shown to improve survival rates in these cancer patients.
Innovative treatment for bladder cancer: While radical surgery is traditionally prescribed for advanced bladder cancer, our oncologists have been successful since 2000 in preserving the organ in many patients through the advanced use of chemotherapy and interferon.
